Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital 100-year legacy continues with new Emergency Department
On October 12, 2015, Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital opened the doors to its newly constructed emergency department (ED) after announcing plans for expansion and renovation in 2013.
Originally constructed to accommodate 27,000 visits annually, the emergency department at Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital treated nearly 47,000 patients last year.
Built on the original site that the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother admitted the hospital’s first patient on January 28, 1913, Ministry Saint Michael’s continues to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community.
Sharing a campus with Ministry Medical Group, Ministry Saint Michael’s offers a comprehensive range of services, with the emergency department being busiest within the Ministry Health Care system and the only emergency department in Portage County.
"We are excited to complete this phase in our overall campus enhancement project," shared Cherrie Pavelec-Marti, Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital vice president of facilities. "We are proud to be building on our 100-year legacy and look forward to the next phases that will allow us to better serve the needs of our patients."
The ED upgrade brings together resources from key portions of the emergency department with surgical preparation and recovery to create a more efficient and enhanced patient care experience.
Key ED upgrades include improving privacy with private waiting rooms and making waiting, consult, and registration areas less public; reducing patient wait time, improving efficiency by maximizing facility capacity and staff resources; as well as a new South entrance, new East corridor connecting North and South entrances, and covered ambulance garage.
Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital ED will be fully completed in two years with other construction projects and upgrades to follow including the renovation of the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).
